About

I am a 38 year old woman, living in Ohio, who loves endurance running.  I also recently discovered (in March 2018) that I have been living for years or decades with hypothyroidism (and Hashimoto’s).  I had my thyroid removed due to multinodular goiter (and thyroid cancer), and I’m now working on getting my thyroid hormone level adjusted so I no longer experience hypothyroidism symptoms, but I’m not there yet.

 I started this blog because:

1  I’d like to share my thyroid cancer experience so people going through a similar journey will know what they might expect.  Papillary thyroid cancer in someone my age has an excellent prognosis, and I only needed a thyroidectomy for cancer treatment (as far as I know – hopefully I will know for sure about radioactive iodine by December 2018).

2  A quick internet search suggests endurance sports may play a role in causing hypothyroidism, but this isn’t at all clear whether that’s true or not in someone who does long term endurance running, and I’d like to do some research and post what I find on this blog.

3 I love running, and running while having increased hypothyroidism symptoms has been a real struggle the last few months.  I have started a weekly running log to share what I’m up to with my running and how my thyroid hormone status affects my running.
